What Does A Newborn Face After Birth?

Updated: Dec 25, 2024

Have you ever wondered what happens to a child that ends up in the hospital straight after birth? A newborn could end up being admitted to a hospital for any number of reasons, from a birth defect to being born prematurely, it varies from child to child.  When a newborn is first admitted, the doctors whisk them away from their parents, acting as fast as they can. They start by drying the child off and warming them up to replicate the skin-to-skin contact a mother would give them while the doctors assess the situation. The doctors must check the heart rate and breathing to determine what tests need to be run and what drugs to administer. After running the appropriate screenings and giving any necessary medicine, the child will either go into surgery if deemed necessary, or be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (the NICU). While in the NICU, the baby will receive specialized care depending on the needs of the child.
